Safer Paper Deliveries
by H Hoare - Tuesday, 17 January 2012, 12:58 PM

Safer Paper Deliveries

The Community Safety Partnership would like you to consider the following points and discuss them with your daughter if she does a paper round.

  • ALWAYS wear a cycle helmet to British Standard - EN1078:1997, ensuring it fits properly and is well secured.
  • Wear bright clothes with fluorescent strips or accessories remembering that fluorescent items help you to be seen during the day only with reflective items working when it is dark.
  • Stay alert at all time and even if walking, don't wear an MP3 player as you are compromising your personal safety.
  • Make sure your bike is the right size for you. It is all too common to see children on a delivery round using a bike which is either too large or too small, both of which can be dangerous.
  • Make sure your bike is well maintained - check your tyres, brakes and lights on a regular basis to ensure they are safe and working.
  • Remember - it is against the law to ride your bike in the dark without a white front light, red rear light, red rear reflector, and amber pedal reflectors.
  • You MUST NOT cycle on the pavement, unless there is a designated cycle path or shared use path.
  • As a cyclist you have the same responsibilities on the road as a vehicle driver to know and understand the Highway Code.
  • Don't be tempted to overload bags as this will cause you to become unstable on your bike.
  • If not already fitted, add a bell to your bike to help make other road users know you are there.
  • Don't wear an MP3 player on your bike. Without being able to hear what is happening around you, your senses are limited and you are putting yourself in danger.
  • Parents - make sure your child is a Safer Cyclist. Do they have experience and ability to cycle on the roads in the darker mornings ? Do you feel they are equipped to leave the house alone ?
